Traditional Chinese Medicine Near Me in Orlando: What to Expect

By Dr. Ajay Purohit, DTCM, MPH · Spectrum WellCare · MetroWest Orlando FL

When someone searches for traditional Chinese medicine near me, they are usually looking for more than a definition. They want to know what the treatment includes, whether it may fit their concern, and what will happen when they sit down with a practitioner. I want to explain how I approach that first conversation at Spectrum WellCare.

What does Traditional Chinese Medicine include?

Traditional Chinese Medicine, often called TCM, may include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, nutrition guidance, cupping, lifestyle recommendations, and other treatment methods. The right approach depends on the person in front of me. I do not use the same treatment plan for everyone who walks in with the same diagnosis.

At my MetroWest Orlando clinic, I look at your symptoms, health history, current medications and supplements, daily habits, and the way your concern is affecting your life. The goal is to understand the pattern behind the complaint so the plan is connected to you, not just to a label.

What is the difference between acupuncture and herbal medicine?

Acupuncture uses very thin, sterile, single-use needles at selected points on the body. Chinese herbal medicine uses herbs or formulas chosen for your presentation. Some patients receive acupuncture, some receive herbal support, and some may benefit from both.

Herbs are not selected simply because a formula is advertised for headaches, digestion, pain, or sleep. I review the full picture first. If you take prescription medication or other supplements, tell me so I can consider safety and whether herbs are appropriate. Learn more about our Chinese herbal medicine services in Orlando.

How does Dr. AJ evaluate a patient?

My first job is to listen. I ask when the concern started, what makes it better or worse, how you sleep, how you digest food, your energy, stress level, prior treatment, and what you want to improve. I also review relevant medical history and the care you are already receiving.

After that, I may use tongue and pulse observation along with the rest of the intake. These are pieces of information, not magic tests and not a replacement for appropriate medical evaluation. They help me organize the presentation through a TCM pattern and decide what type of care may be reasonable.

What does tongue and pulse diagnosis mean?

In TCM, the tongue and pulse can provide additional information about how a person is presenting at the time of the visit. I consider color, shape, coating, moisture, and other observations of the tongue. With the pulse, I consider qualities such as rate, rhythm, strength, and depth.

I never use one finding by itself to make a treatment decision. I compare those observations with your history, symptoms, examination, medications, and goals. That is why a real consultation matters more than choosing an herb or acupuncture point from a general list online.

Not sure whether TCM is right for you?
Tell us what has been happening. We can help you understand whether a consultation, acupuncture, herbal medicine, or another next step makes sense for your situation.

Why might two patients receive different treatments?

Two people can have the same Western diagnosis and still have different symptoms, triggers, energy, sleep, digestion, and medical histories. In TCM, those differences can point to different patterns. That is why two patients may not receive the same acupuncture points or herbal formula.

It also means the plan can change. If the original pattern improves, another issue may become more noticeable. I reassess instead of continuing a formula automatically. Your feedback between appointments helps me decide whether the plan is helping and what needs to be adjusted.

What happens during a TCM consultation in Orlando?

A consultation gives you time to explain what you have been experiencing and what you have already tried. I review your health history, symptoms, medications and supplements, then discuss what I see from a TCM perspective. If care is appropriate, I explain the proposed plan in plain language.

We may discuss acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, MPS therapy, or a combination of options. I do not expect you to arrive knowing which treatment you need. That is what the evaluation is for. You can review our Traditional Chinese Medicine service page before contacting the office.
