Patients often come to me after dealing with a health concern that keeps returning. They may have tried medication, supplements, diet changes, or other treatments and still feel that something is being missed.
One of the first questions I hear is, “Which herb should I take?” My answer is that I first need to understand the pattern behind the symptom. Chinese herbal medicine is not about matching one herb to one complaint.
Two people may both have bloating, migraines, fatigue, poor sleep, or pain, but their overall health picture may be completely different.

What Is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine is one part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It uses individual herbs and formulas selected according to the patient’s symptoms, health history, constitution, and TCM pattern.
The formula is not chosen simply because it is advertised for headaches, digestion, pain, or sleep. I look at how the symptoms are presenting and what else is happening in the body at the same time.
How Does Chinese Herbal Medicine Work?
In my practice, treatment begins with information. I want to know when your concern started, what affects it, how you sleep, how you digest food, your energy level, your stress, and what treatments you have already tried.
I then compare that information with what I observe through tongue and pulse diagnosis. This helps me identify the pattern that may be contributing to the complaint.
The formula is selected to address that pattern. As your presentation changes, the formula may also need to change.
What Are the Benefits of Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Patients often ask about Chinese herbal medicine for digestive concerns, bloating, fatigue, sleep problems, stress, headaches, migraines, chronic pain, and other recurring symptoms.
Whether herbs are appropriate depends on the individual. A consultation helps determine whether Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, or a combination of care may fit your situation.

Is Chinese Herbal Medicine Safe?
Herbs are not automatically safe for everyone simply because they are natural. They can interact with medications and may not be appropriate during pregnancy, before surgery, or with certain medical conditions.
Bring a current list of your medications and supplements to your evaluation. Tell Dr. AJ about your complete health history before starting a formula.
How Does Dr. AJ Use TCM Pattern Diagnosis?
When I say I am treating a pattern, I am not guessing based on one symptom. I am putting together the full picture from your history, symptoms, tongue, pulse, and response to treatment.
Common TCM patterns may include Dampness, Damp Heat, Blood Stasis, Deficiency, Excess, Qi stagnation, or meridian disharmony. The same symptom can appear in more than one pattern, which is why the evaluation matters.

Why Can Two Patients Need Different Herbal Formulas?
Two patients may both report bloating. One may also have loose stools, fatigue, and a heavy feeling after eating. Another may have bloating with constipation, stress, pain, or signs of Heat.
They both use the word “bloating,” but their presentations are different. The formula must match the patient, not just the symptom.
Why May Your Herbal Formula Change?
Patterns can change during treatment. A patient may first show signs of Damp Heat. After that pattern improves, an underlying deficiency may become easier to see.
Changing the formula does not mean the first formula was wrong. It means the treatment is responding to the patient’s current presentation. Your feedback helps me decide what needs attention next.
What Happens During a Chinese Herbal Medicine Evaluation?
During the evaluation, you will have the opportunity to explain what has been happening, what you have tried, and what you want help with. I will review your health history, medications, supplements, symptoms, tongue, and pulse.
After that, I can explain what I see, whether Chinese herbal medicine may be appropriate, and what the next step may look like.
Not sure where to start? You do not have to know which herb or formula you need before contacting us. Tell us what has been happening, and Dr. AJ’s office will help you understand the next step.
